Our People

JRCJOHN COLLINS:
John Robert Design’s philosophy is deeply rooted in owner John Collins vision – integrating the sustainable beauty of nature with the needs of society. He is the driving force behind John Robert Design.

John’s motivation to become a landscape designer grew from a desire to express his artisitic talents through his love of nature. Early on in his career, it became apparent he had an instinct for making outdoor living spaces useful and extraordinary.

Growing up in a traditional suburban neighborhood influenced John’s efforts to blend the natural geography of the land back into the American landscape. He has owned and operated his own landscape business for over 20 years – morphing from a maintenance business into a well respected landscape design firm.

Although John has designed and installed landscape projects from coast to coast, home base is California.

Landscape Design

Design is the first building block of a great landscape. This initial step ensures success even before the construction process begins.

Included in the layout of your design:

  • Landscape budget for installation (professional or self-installed)
  • Hardscape choices: brick, rock veneer, gravel, cement, ect.
  • Planting options: trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals for spot color
  • Placement of embellishments: pergolas, bridges, fountains, benches, accent rocks
  • Lighting plans and irrigation layouts can also be included in the design plan.

    • In addition to design, John Robert Design is equipped to install your desired landscape and set up a maintenance schedule for continued beauty of your new landscape (diagrams can be set up for self-install as well).

Consultation

During a scheduled appointment, our design consultant will walk with you through your property, answer your questions, make recommendations and provide landscape solutions to specific problems. Clients have a choice of receiving a price for a landscape design based on the walk through which including appropriate referrals and resources for future reference or simply doing the walk through of the property.

Whether you plan to do the work yourself or hire a professional landscaper, we can help you  determine how you can create a landscape solution that suits your lifestyle - one that is more sustainable, diverse, functional and beautiful with a clear understanding of where to begin your project.

Erosion Control

To prevent soil from washing away, erosion control can be incorporated into new and existing landscapes. In many cases the control methods will not only prevent the soil from washing away, but will enhance the landscape by holding back valuable soil nutrients. Erosion control methods vary greatly, and many communities have strict regulations, but we can find the best solution for your landscape.

    Erosion Control Methods:
  • Plants: Slope stabilizing can best be achieved with native plantings. As rain falls on your water shed the plants and tree roots absorb rain and hold the earth together while the foliage brakes and slows the erosion process.
  • Mats and Netting: Various types of landscape mats and netting can be used to hold soils in place as the planting becomes established, such as: native plantings, native plugs and seeding netting, wattles, log rolls and silt fencing.
  • Shaped Terrain: Soil can be contoured on gentle slopes to slow or control the flow of water. Over time, silt and soil will gradually fill in these contours to provide a level surface to the flow of water in heavy rains.
  • Retaining Walls and Drainage: Permanent rock walls, log structures, cement structures and well planned drainage can help direct the flow of water to planned collection ponds or irrigation systems.
